What if the person who caused my injuries does not have insurance?
Unfortunately, many drivers in Florida are either uninsured or the insurance policy that they have in place does not provide for any bodily injury protection insurance. Under these circumstances, there may not be any insurance available to compensate you for your damages. It is, therefore, very important that you maintain what is known as uninsured motorist coverage or underinsured motorist coverage under your own motor vehicle insurance policy. Uninsured motorist coverage enables you to recover for your damages under your own policy when the driver at fault does not have bodily injury coverage or the bodily injury coverage available is not sufficient to fully compensate you for your injuries. Sometimes, family members that reside with you may have uninsured motorist coverage on their policies which would cover you if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist. It can sometimes be complicated to sort out what uninsured motorist coverage is available to protect you and you should consult an attorney for this purpose.
